What is PRP (Platelet Rich Plasma) Therapy?
Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) treatments are designed to capitalise on your body’s natural capacity to heal and regenerate.* It involves extracting your own blood, then using it to plump up your skin and reverse damage from UV and aging.
How is Platelet Rich Plasma treatment performed?
PRP has been proven to assist in the proliferation of dermal fibroblasts and an increase in the expression of both collagen type 1 and type 2. Both these factors contribute to an increasingly youthful appearance and an improvement in skin integrity.
Regeneration results including improvements in tone and texture are best seen at around 2-3 weeks post treatment. Skin will improve over the months to come.
Other therapies such as laser and use of correct cosmeceutical skin care should also be used to achieve optimal results.
Are there any contraindications?
Contraindications to the procedure include: smokers, platelet dysfunction syndrome, sepsis, acute infection, skin diseases or cancer, and chronic liver pathology and severe metabolic and systemic disorders.
Side effects of PRP include minimal swelling around the treatment site, bruising and redness for around 24 hours post treatment. A headache may also appear. Some patients have reported a faint feeling. Skin infection is an extremely rare complication. However overall the procedure carries minimal risk, and is a relatively quick procedure with no down time. The procedure takes around an hour.
